During this pandemic lock-down period Nigel Danson, one of the two YouTube vloggers I’ve been following since 2019, has launched an international landscape competition to raise money for Covid-19 causes as well as to provide a focus of activity at a time when travel and landscape photography are significantly limited.
This month’s project is therefore my entry of 5 images to this exciting challenge. These images are all taken from my 2010 - 2018 Portfolio and are re-cropped and re-processed to a) give them more impact and b) meet the criteria set by the six judges. It has been an invaluable learning exercise to see my original versions and how I’ve now developed a more sophisticated approach to viewing and enhancing an image - I hope you agree! Exmoor and Rainbow have been cropped the most, and all five images have had their exposure reduced to give a moodier “feel”. Exmoor, Rainbow and Galiskari chapel have had their main subjects highlighted more i.e. the tree, the beach and the chapel respectively. One of the key judging criteria is to evoke emotion: I wonder what emotion/s each image suggests for you as you view it? Do share…
The entry was limited to 5 images. I initially short-listed 10, but 3 were eliminated as they were taken after 1 March 2020, the latest eligible date, as some countries imposed their lock-downs earlier than the UK. After some consideration I eliminated these 2 remaining images as, while they meant something to me, I felt they didn’t evoke sufficient emotion in the eyes of the potential viewer. What do you think?
POSTCRIPT: None of my submissions was shortlisted out of 4,838 images - but it was still a very valuable exercise! And over £10,000 was raised fo Covid-19 causes. Click on the Competition Website link below to see the top seven winners and 50 commended submissions:
